Page speed is important, and there are definitely things you can do to improve page speed. However, it can also be misunderstood. Most tools on the internet test according to machine standards against highly optimized sites designed for those very tools to sell a service. However, designers work to make sites optimal for human interaction. Thus, the best possible test is to use a browser with a clean cache and load your page. If it loads quickly to your human eye then you are good. Chasing the highest possible speed is an exercise in quickly diminishing returns especially when from a human user's perception, the site loads quickly.
If there are significant delays, however, if you have to wait for the content to load more than a couple of seconds you should work to optimize the page:
1. use smaller images (https://imagecompressor.com)
2. use fewer calls to outside sites (like widgets, google maps, google ads, ad servers, YouTube Videos)
3. Use fewer images
Now, while each of these deletions will speed up your page, they may also diminish the user experience. Like everything else, it is a balancing act. Use common sense and test with a clean browser. If you as a typical user are not bothered by the speed of the page, then your site visitors won't be either.
